UNDERSTANDING
What is Vulvodynia?
Vulvodynia is chronic pain or discomfort around the opening of the vagina (vulva) that lasts at least three months and for which there is no identifiable cause .
The pain, burning, or irritation associated with vulvodynia can make you so uncomfortable that sitting for long periods or having sex becomes unthinkable. Untreated, the condition can last for months or even years. An estimated 16% of women suffer from vulvodynia at some point in their lives.
If left untreated, vulvodynia can sometimes affect women for many years. We, therefore, advise starting therapy as early as possible.
HOW IT STARTS
Vulvodynia Symptoms
Your pain might be constant or occasional. It might occur only when the sensitive area is touched. You might feel the pain in your entire vulvar area, or the pain might be localized to a certain area, such as the opening of your vagina.
The main vulvodynia symptom is pain in your genital area, which can be characterized as burning, soreness, stinging, rawness, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), throbbing, or itching.
In addition to physical pain, vulvodynia often results in psychological problems and anxiety triggered by hopelessness and a feeling of desperation when therapies don’t have the desired effect or no medical cause for the discomfort can be found.
INVESTIGATION
Course & Diagnosis of Vulvodynia
A medical evaluation for vulvodynia usually consists of a thorough review of your medical history. Your doctor might ask when your pain began, where it hurts, or how it feels. They may request details about your surgical history or childbirth experiences. Don't let embarrassment stop you from answering truthfully. Answers to these questions provide clues to the cause of your pain.
In addition, the doctor usually conducts a pelvic exam. Your doctor visually examines your external genitals and vagina for signs of infection or other causes of your symptoms. Even if there is no visual evidence of infection, your doctor might take a sample of cells from your vagina to test for an infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.
COMPLEXITY
Causes & Difficulties of Vulvodynia
Vulvodynia is a condition that can be caused by the following physical stressors: injury to, or irritation of, the nerves surrounding your vulvar region; past vaginal infections; allergies or sensitive skin; hormonal changes; muscle spasms or weakness in the pelvic floor that supports the uterus, bladder, and bowels. Vulvodynia can also be triggered by emotional stressors, such as psychological issues (for example, anxiety, depression, fear of intimacy, or relationship problems); or stress.
Physical causes of painful intercourse differ, depending on whether the pain occurs at entry or with deep thrusting. Emotional factors might be associated with many types of painful intercourse.
START HEALING
Vulvodynia Treatment
The main difficulty with vulvodynia is that treatment must be administered in an interdisciplinary manner by different specialists at the same time. Individual physicians often lack the time or capabilities for such a holistic approach.
In recent years, the prognosis has improved greatly, with promising chances of healing using a multimodal treatment.
Today, science supports a combination of physical therapy for pelvic floor such as stretches and techniques to release overtensed muscles in the pelvic, bladder, or anal area (trigger points); psychological therapy such as paradoxical and progressive relaxation techniques to reduce causative stress; and neuropathic irritation, which can help to cure or reduce causes and symptoms.

It’s not your fault...
It’s not your fault that you experience these symptoms and that your quality of life suffers so much.
How are you supposed to know what to do when most doctors don’t have an effective solution for your problem? Instead, they prescribe painkillers and all sorts of medications that neither combat the symptoms directly nor have a long-term effect.
Finally, learn what really helps and say goodbye to:
- The hopeless days of pain
- The disappointing advice of clueless therapists
- The pressure you put on yourself to “tough it out”
- The desperate question, “Will this ever end?”
YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Multitudes of affected people were once exactly where you are now: hurting and desperate.
So, if you’re looking for a solution to get your symptoms and discomfort under control, once and for all…
Congratulations. You found us!
